I am constantly searching for books that do more than entertain for my students. Stories that invite reflection, transmit values, and stay with young readers long after the final page. Soapy Sally and the Cousin Crew: Legacy of Bubble Fox Hollow is exactly that kind of book. Rooted in an Appalachian tale, it carries the quiet power of oral tradition, honoring folklore while making it accessible, playful, and deeply meaningful for today’s children. The narrative unfolds with warmth and clarity, blending magic, mystery, and family bonds in a way that feels both timeless and urgently relevant.
What makes this book a true treasure is its emotional intelligence. Beneath the whimsical surface—talking creatures, riddles, enchanted forests—there is a thoughtful exploration of courage, truth, healing, and belonging. It is didactic without ever feeling moralistic, imaginative without losing emotional grounding. While it is clearly crafted for children, it also speaks tenderly to the inner child in adults, reminding us why stories matter in the first place. This is the kind of book that preserves cultural magic, nurtures empathy, and quietly teaches values the world still needs. I would place it in any classroom library with complete confidence and recommend it just as strongly to families reading together at home.

A heartwarming, cozy middle-grade portal fantasy that’s perfect for families and younger readers who want a gentle fetch-quest in a wondrous magical world.
A cozy little portal fantasy mystery fetch quest story. When I first saw the digital cover, I thought that this was just going to be a short little children’s picture book. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a complete novel, well written and with lovely chapter illustrations. The story is definitely geared at children, but as a parent I enjoyed reading about the Cousin Crew’s adventure in Bubble Fox Hollow.
The first description of the magical Bubble Fox Hollow was glorious, and it set the tone for the wonder that followed. The author does a great job of describing the world and certain elements have the perfect quirky, imaginative twist that really sparks the wonder and magic of the story. The thread of the cousins piecing together their grandmother’s childhood adds an extra layer of interest. Highly recommended.

“The book was really good. I really want to read the next one. I think they did a good job. It is really special. I hope the second book will introduce more animals, because the animals were the most fun. Overall, this book is the best book I have ever read. Thank you for letting me read this book and review! The author did a great job and I look forward to reading the next one hopefully soon!”
My son read most of the book within 24 hours. He flew through it and said it was amazing when I asked as he was reading. He couldn’t put it down.

A middle grade fantasy adventure that will hook young readers from page one
A group of cousins travel to a secret hollow with magical creatures, where they must work together to help solve the mystery of Soapy Sally and help her to save Bubble Fox Hollow. The setting is beautifully and vividly described, and you feel as if you are traveling through the hollow with the five cousins, who range in age from five to twelve. Throughout the adventure, the kids must work together to figure out what Sally’s rhyming clues mean. Each clue sends them further on their quest, keeping the story moving along, with a surprising twist at the end. This heartwarming story will make readers believe in magic!

A new world to explore
The human Cousin Crew were fun enough, but honestly, the animals stole the show for me: a turtle-dog hybrid with a stained-glass shell that glows from the inside; a unicorn-phoenix combo with the power of both frost and flame; a sneezing cat Queen that makes magic happen with every achoo. I’m here for all of them. Pure magic!
The rhyming clues, vivid imagery, and clever touches, like the field of “dande’lions”, will keep an adult entertained, but this is truly a story that kids will devour. You could read it with a 6–7 year old, or let older kids run wild on their own. Beneath all the vivid magic, sparkle and wonder though, there’s a heart that makes this one worth sharing with your kids.
